\"LITTLE<\/a>There was a time in our history when\u00a0paper\u00a0was too\u00a0expensive for the average\u00a0writer.\u00a0\u00a0Paints and canvas were\u00a0an\u00a0indulgance for\u00a0the rich;\u00a0materials were simply too costly.\u00a0 It’s crazy to think that these items were for the elite, not the everyday artist.<\/p>\n

Prior to the 1990’s, the equipment used in recording studios was\u00a0so expensive that musicians\u00a0were paying more than $100\/hour to\u00a0get the use of a facility that owned some of it.\u00a0 In fact, time was so expensive\u00a0in the early days that only well capitalized record\u00a0companies could afford to rent\u00a0the studios for the musicians.\u00a0 The rate included the studio engineer who, by the way,\u00a0most likely\u00a0had\u00a0a college\u00a0degree in electrical engineering.<\/p>\n

Video equipment followed the same plot line.\u00a0 Before the early 2000’s, Only TV stations and\u00a0high-end independents with rates to match could afford the\u00a0equipment necessary to produce\u00a0professional looking\u00a0videos.<\/p>\n

Today, with a credit card and\u00a0stops at a big box electronics retailer\u00a0and a\u00a0music store,\u00a0you can take home enough equipment to\u00a0do both jobs.\u00a0 Hey, pick up some paint and\u00a0paper and you can be a writer and an artist too!\u00a0 I’m being facetious.\u00a0 The point is this; if you think that media communication\u00a0is important enough to do it regularly, than you need to consider doing it yourself.<\/p>\n

Ian Kanski <\/a>from IMR Digital<\/a> and I have discussed this\u00a0many times.\u00a0 He believes that once\u00a0technology\u00a0can be placed directly into the hands of creative people, everything changes.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0story teller, the artist,\u00a0and the musician need no\u00a0go-between.\u00a0 Once they understand the tools, they\u00a0can begin\u00a0presenting their vision.<\/p>\n

Sometimes\u00a0technology learning curves\u00a0require patience and practice.\u00a0 Just because we can go buy a Fender Stratocaster at any music store doesn’t mean we’ll\u00a0be Jimi\u00a0Hendrix.\u00a0 So before we set up\u00a0media production in that empty bedroom\/cubicle by HR, there are a few\u00a0questions that\u00a0I usually ask my clients;<\/p>\n

  1. Do you have a creative person on your staff that\u00a0would be interested in this type of role part time?\u00a0 Maybe they have media experience.\u00a0 Maybe they\u00a0think it would be fun.<\/li>\n
  2. Do you have a digital media strategy <\/a>that includes\u00a0the need for professional\u00a0final products?\u00a0 Hey, smart phones do a great job of taking pictures and capturing video.\u00a0 Audio is another\u00a0story, but if short, regular FB posts are your objective, then\u00a0good audio may not be necessary.<\/li>\n
